After a weekend of rain, wind and widespread flooding, temperatures are expected to drop sharply next week as December gets off to a wintery start.

The Daily Express reports that the whole country can expect freezing temperatures, ice and even snow - and the chilly conditions could last until the middle of December.

Leon Brown, forecaster at The Weather Channel, told AOL Travel: "Winter will arrive as we go through next week.

"It will turn much colder, with widespread frost and ice and daytime temperatures around 3C. From the middle of the week we can expect sleet and snow showers over north and east Scotland, with more general snow showers in the North East of England by next weekend."

The Met Office warns that it will become cold at the start of December, with widespread overnight frosts and snow showers in the north and east.

Looking towards Christmas, the weather is expected to be colder than usual, with an increased risk of snow.
