Dumb ways to die: latest Australian train safety video causes a stir

Updated

An online safety information video featuring featuring suicidal cartoon characters has gone viral, with almost 12 million views in less than a week.

The Melbourne Metro Trains ad, titled 'Dumb Ways Die" includes all sorts of improbable ways of killing oneself, including using your private parts as piranha bait and selling both kidneys on the internet.

The grand finale includes cartoon characters falling off train platforms and crossing rail tracks, meeting predictable blood-splattered fates.

Speaking to Australian marketing company mUmbrella, the video's director John Mescall said: "The decision to mix a morbid subject matter with saccharine levels of cute is what ultimately made it funny."
