Are we in for the coldest winter in 100 years?

If the forecasters are to be believed, we should pick up some thermals and get our winter woolies ready because we could be facing the harshest winter for a century.

The Express reports that temperatures could fall as low as minus 20C in rural areas, and heavy snow and blizzards could cause significant transport problems.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, told The Express: "We are looking at some of the coldest and snowiest conditions in at least 100 years. This is most likely to occur in the December to January period with the potential for widespread major snowfall across the country."

According to the Met Office, we're in for a chilly weekend, too.

Met Office forecasters predict an overnight frost tonight before we head into a wet and windy - but milder - week. However, temperatures are expected to drop again by next weekend, with the possibility of colder and drier conditions developing by the end of the month.
