Road test: Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

Vauxhall Zafira TourerVauxhall

Vauxhall is aiming to climb upmarket with a larger, more stylish, well-built seven-seater. Is it any good?

What is it?

For too long, Vauxhall has been absent from the larger MPV market, but the firm now aims to put that right. The seven-seat Tourer will be going up against vanguards such as the Ford S-Max and the Volkswagen Sharan, as well as Vauxhall's own smaller Zafira.
What's under the bonnet?

Two petrols and three diesels. The former comes in 138bhp 1.4-litre turbo and 138bhp 1.8-litre guises, while the 2.0-litre diesel comes with three power outputs – 108bhp, 128bhp and 163bhp. Vauxhall predicts the 128bhp diesel will be the best seller, and a 128bhp ecoFLEX version will launch soon as well.

What's the kit like?

There are five models and, as you'd expect, specifications are spread out. The entry 1.8-litre ES has air con, DAB radio, cruise control and steel wheels for the round figure of £21k, while the range tops out with the 2.0-litre diesel with 163bhp. Elite trim has leather, panoramic sunroof, sports seats and 18-inch alloys for £28,645.

Any rivals?

Plenty. Ford's S-Max, VW's Sharan and even Vauxhall's own smaller Zafira are all in the sights of the larger Zafira Tourer, not to mention the Chevrolet Orlando, which shares a number of components with the Zafira Tourer, but comes in at far lower price.

Is it any good?

The car has notable levels of front-end grip and minimal body roll, but parking can be tricky due to its size. We agree with Vauxhall's prediction – there's little reason for buyers to opt for the more-powerful diesel, as the 128bhp is more than adequate. Great looks and a classy interior help complete a compelling and attractive package.

The AOL Cars verdict

The Tourer is another prime example that Vauxhall is trying to take the brand upmarket with better interior quality, stylish looks, good handling and a comfortable ride. Our only quibble is that it's a little pricey but the build quality and classy design makes up for it.
