An El Al flight en route from Tel Aviv to New York made an emergency landing in Ireland after passengers said they smelled something burning.

The plane was carrying more than 300 passengers and crew members, when it touched down Dublin's Shannon Airport on Monday.

The pilot decided to make the emergency landing six hours into the flight after the odour became stronger rather than dissipating.

According to the Jewish Chronicle, one passenger said: "There was a very strong smell so the crew turned off the electricity supply, but it didn't help."

Just last month, a plane carrying 323 passengers to Tenerife from Manchester made an emergency landing at Dublin Airport after smoke was detected in the cockpit.

According to the BBC, a spokeswoman for the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) said the Thomas Cook flight bound for the Canary Islands touched down without incident.

All 323 passengers were evacuated from the plane and taken to the airport terminal.

The DAA's full emergency response team was activated and backed up by at least a dozen fire and ambulance crews from Dublin.

A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook Airlines told AFP: "The aircraft was met by airport services as is standard procedures in such cases, but no action was required by them."
