The moment an owl captured a domestic cat for a spot of lunch has been captured on camera.

In a case of the owl versus the pussycat, the bird of prey is seen staring into the camera as it made its incredible catch in Minnesota, US.

The owls are known to pick the cats up high in the air and drop them repeatedly until they can't run away.

They then eat them, in some cases still alive, according to The Sun.

It is not known whether this unfortunate pet survived.

According to the Daily Mail, cats are a bit of a special treat for the barn owl, which has a varied menu, preying on mice, shrews, rats, squirrels, rabbits, mink and weasels - as well as birds including woodpeckers, grouse and even fish, turtles, lizards and scorpions.

It is attracted by campfires and street lamps, and recent studies show the predator is increasingly thriving in America's northwest suburban neighbourhoods.
