A cat is being treated for burns after surviving an six-mile journey sat on the boiling hot engine of a van in Edinburgh.

The Persian cat, who's been nicknamed Penelope, was discovered under the bonnet of the van after the driver noticed a burning smell.

Penelope is also being treated for a fractured jaw, so it is thought she may have had a fall before seeking refuge in the bonnet.

The Scottish SPCA believe she recently went missing from her home, and are now looking to reunite her with her owner.

Steph Grant, animal rescue officer, told the Daily Mail: "Penelope has sustained burns to the pads on her feet and part of her coat is singed.

"She also has a fractured jaw and cut under her chin as well as a missing tooth, so we think she may have fallen from a height and hit her face on the ground shortly before climbing inside the engine.

"Penelope is receiving antibiotics for her burns and has had her jaw wired.

"She's doing well and has proven to be very friendly and good-natured.

"It could be that Penelope is a house cat and isn't used to being outdoors so she went inside the engine for warmth and shelter.

"Penelope's owner must be very worried and we'd love to return her home after her frightening ordeal."

At the beginning of October, a dog miraculously survived being hit by a car and then travelling at speeds of up to 50mph after getting stuck in the front grate.

The white female poodle mix was hit by the driver of a Toyota in Taunton Massachusetts after running out in front of the car.

The driver reportedly hit the brakes, but did not see the dog, and so continued his journey to Rhode Island, according to the Telegraph.

The dog is said to be fine, although suffered a concussion and also possibly a ruptured bladder.
