A woman who jumped overboard from a Carnival cruise ship was rescued on Sunday, officials have confirmed.

NBC News reports that the 29-year-old passenger was aboard Carnival Destiny, which left the Port of Miami, Florida on Saturday, when she was seen jumping overboard at around 12:10am, a company statement read.

Search and rescue operations were immediately initiated and the woman was located, brought on board and treated at the ship's medical centre.

Physicians on the ship found that she needed further treatment at a shoreside facility and Destiny was diverted to Key West, Florida instead of going to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

The ship is on a five-day Caribbean cruise and is scheduled to return on Thursday.
