A British couple have been arrested while on holiday in Spain after taking their baby to hospital with a fractured skull.

The couple, who are in their thirties, said their two-and-a-half-month-old daughter was hit on the head with a ball while the family were on the beach in the Costa del Sol, according to the Daily Mail.

They took their daughter to the emergency department of the hospital in Marbella in the early hours of last Friday morning after she would not stop crying.

According to the Daily Telegraph, paediatricians at Marbella's Costa Del Sol hospital said she had various fractures to the skull, had suffered a haemorrhage and had other serious internal injuries and, following the usual protocol, reported the case to police.

A police source told local newspaper Sur that the parents gave differing versions of what had happened.

The couple, who also have a two-year-old boy, were due to return to the UK this week, but instead have been arrested pending an investigation into possible mistreatment.

Their daughter is described as being in a "stable condition", and both the children are in the guardianship of their grandparents.

The British Embassy in Madrid said: "We are aware of the detention of a British couple and are providing consular assistance."
