Hertz sells off rental cars on the cheap

Maurice and Judith Hart with carCar rental firm Hertz is becoming a second-hand car dealer offering its recently-rented models at discount prices.

It says it has "1,000s of well maintained, late model vehicles" and will offer punters the chance to take a test drive for up to 10 days. You rent a car but if you like it and buy it, the rental is free.

Rent to buy

Hertz Rent2Buy reckons its cars and vans will notch up big discounts, safe in the knowledge that the cars and vans have been well maintained by Hertz professionals. It reckons eight out of the 10 most common Rent2Buy models will be sold at prices cheaper than the second-hand car price bible Parkers' suggested used car values.

Customers buying a Fiat 500, for example, can save more than £1,000 on Parkers' suggested price. And to top that, buyers can collect 10,000 Nectar bonus points when they hand over the cash.

All Hertz Rent2Buy vehicles are going to be fully serviced, with many still under manufacturers' warranty and will have between 12,000 and 50,000 miles on the clock. The test drives are offered at 106 Hertz branches across mainland UK.

Cheap rental

If you rent a vehicle with an idea to buy it but change your mind, you can return it and the transaction is treated as a standard rental but will be charged at discounted rates. It also earns Nectar points.

The Hertz Rent2Buy web site www.HertzRent2Buy.co.uk showcases the hand-picked, low mileage vehicles for sale, along with details such as the mileage, colour and registration number. Discounted financing from a Hertz partner is available.

No Hassle

Michel Taride, president of Hertz International, said: "Rent2Buy is unique, hassle-free buying experience for consumers seeking an exceptionally well-priced, high-quality used car. Hertz can pass along great savings to our used car customers because we buy thousands of cars annually at below retail rates."

Rui Ferreira, vice president, fleet remarketing for Hertz International, added: "If you're looking to buy a used car, it's tough to beat the Hertz Rent2Buy programme."

Hart to Hart

Retired lecturer Maurice Hart and his wife Judith a retired health visitor from Pinner, Middlesex (pictured) moved from Scotland to Central London and hadn't owned a car for 13 years, choosing instead to rent whenever they need one.

"After returning the car from a rental, we learnt from the staff that we could buy the car outright from Hertz which was ideal for us as we were about to move to the suburbs, so were considering a new car," says Maurice.

"It was great to experience the car in our own time and see first-hand what miles-per-gallon the car achieved. We also do voluntary work with Guide Dogs and so wanted to check that it would be suitable for carrying them.

"We decided to purchase through Hertz as we've always had good customer service and it's also reassuring that we are buying a well-maintained car from a reputable company. It was a nice change not to have to haggle too.

"It was a really easy process, which was useful given it was a stressful time whilst moving house. Hertz even arranged for an upcoming service to be done whilst we moved and delivered the car back to us after the removal lorries had gone which was a great help. Hertz sorted all the paperwork and answered all my questions promptly too."
