Plane forced to land in Ireland after passenger smells smoke

Another American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger smelled smoke mid-flight.

MailOnline reports that Flight 98 was supposed to fly non-stop from Chicago to London but was diverted to Ireland after the passenger reported a 'smoky odour'.

The incident comes after eight of the airline's planes were grounded when the seats became loose just a few days ago.

There were 246 passengers and 14 crew members on the flight, which landed at Ireland's Shannon Airport yesterday before an inspection took place.

Spokesman Ian Bradley told MailOnline: 'The flight was on its way to Heathrow and there was a report of smoke in the cabin.

'No one saw any smoke, there was just a smell. You don't take chances with something like that.'

Mechanics found that an overhead fan had overheated and the fan was removed.

Mr Bradley said the passengers were given accommodation in Ireland and would finish their journey on the same aircraft today.
