Exclusive: UK-built Civic Type R will be "an icon"

Honda Civic Type will be
Hot Honda fans will be pleased to hear that not only is a brand new Civic Type R on the horizon, but the new hot hatch will be built in the UK.

Honda has confirmed the new hot hatch will be built at its UK manufacturing facility in Swindon.
And the firm's UK MD, Dave Hodgetts, has also revealed the Japanese firm has learnt lessons from the lukewarm reception the previous generation Civic Type R received. Honda has promised the new one will become "an icon".

For years the Japanese manufacturer has been in the doldrums with below-par products that have failed to excite buyers. Hodgetts said the manufacturer realises that and is focussed on producing halo products that will bring the excitement back to the brand.

"The new Civic Type R will be a total reflection of the fact it used to be an icon and will have really, really high performance," Hodgetts told Autoblog at the Paris Motor Show. "There is an understanding at Honda that the last one wasn't up to the level expected. We really need an iconic halo car and the new one will be the genuine article."

Hodgetts said the new Civic Type R will hark back to the success of the Integra Type R models with high performance at its heart.

"Power output will be around 280bhp – it's a proper car," he added. "Honda want it to be the fastest front-wheel drive car around the Nurburgring so it will be up against the Megane RS.
That's a challenge, but it will be a genuine sports product harking back to the good old days."

Swindon will also be producing the Civic Wagon – an estate version of the five-door Civic hatchback.

However, the Swindon plant will be losing its Jazz production. The Japanese firm said the Jazz for the European market will be produced at its Suzuka factory, Japan, quoting "economies of scale" as the reason.
