According to the Toy Insider Hot 20 list, the LeapPad 2, a tablet aimed at three to five-year-olds, is expected to fly off the shelves ahead of the festive season, while the Kurio 7 will be the toy of choice for six to eight-year-olds.

The LeapPad sold well last year but the updated version now boasts a faster processor, twice the memory size and both front and back cameras. It has been ranked as the probable top seller not just by the Toy Insider but also by both Walmart and Toys R Us.

Also on the list is the Wii U Gamepad, the priciest product to make this year's Hot 20, and Activision Blizzard Inc's Skylander video games, while other toys, such as the My Magical Wand Cinderella, have been given a tech spin.

Laurie Schacht, chief executive of Toy Insider publishers Adventure Publishing, said: "It's going to be the war of the tablets.

"What the LeapPad 2 has done is it has really positioned itself not to be part of that tablet war but to be an item for younger kids that gets them ready to move into the older tablets."

Other items expected to sell well are Lego's Friends Heartlake Stables, a new high school playset from Mattel's Monster High, and Hasbro's latest board game, Words With Friends.
