Four 'heroic' nurses save train driver having heart attack

The train was headed for Liverpool Lime Street: PA

Four nurses rushed to the aid of a train driver who suffered a heart attack while at the helm of a commuter train.

The man was in control of a commuter train heading from Scarborough to Liverpool Lime Street when he started experiencing breathing problems.

With his passengers in mind, the driver managed to bring the service to a safe emergency stop at Sherburn, and the train conductor asked passengers on board if they had any medical training.

Four nurses came forward to help - one from Scarborough and three from Preston - and administered first aid until emergency services arrived.

The driver was then airlifted by Yorkshire Air Ambulance to a specialist cardiac unit in Hull.

Passengers were stranded for more than an hour on the train, but the good news is that the man, thought to be in his 50s, is making a good recovery.

A spokesman for TransPennine Express told the Lancashire Evening Post: "A member of train crew was found to be seriously unwell and emergency services were called and responded.

"Assistance was also provided by medically trained passengers on board the train.

"A member of staff was later airlifted to Castle Hill hospital in Hull."
