Diving with great white sharks is the latest adventure for thrill-seeking holidaymakers. Here's how to try cage diving, swimming with tuna or exploring shipwrecks.

You've been on a glass-bottom boat ride, had a go at snorkelling at your resort and even been whale spotting. So what's next on your sea safaris checklist? How about swimming with sharks, getting up close to enormous tuna fish, or going deeper into the sea to explore a shipwreck?

The possibilities of underwater adventure are endless - and if you're a thrill seeker or just love discovering the wonders of the sea, there are plenty of opportunities for a memorable holiday.

Swimming with sharks is the ultimate experience for adrenalin junkies going underwater. Great whites are one of the most feared predators on the planet but you can find ouy just how fascinating they are on a cage diving trip.

Shark cage diving. Marine Dynamics

Cage diving allows you to have a true shark encounter without being an experienced diver and while staying safe in a cage. You'll be able to take great photos too as you don't have to be alert to what's happening around you.

South Africa is one of the best places in the world for shark diving with enough access to great white sharks. Most companies that organise tours have a marine biologist on the expedition to explain everything you need to know about sharks, so you will return with more respect for them. Try eco-tourism and conservation organisation Marine Dynamic Shark Tours, which organises shark cage diving experiences from £110 off the coast of world-famous great white shark spot, Gansbaai.

With an abundance of aquatic life AND great white sharks, Australia is another top destination for cage diving. But if you fancy something more unique and not so scary, opt for swimming with tuna. It's true that we encounter the fish more in tins than in the sea, but diving with these massive fish (with rather sharp scales) make for an exhilarating experience and the overlooked region of South Australia is the place to try it. Head to Eyre Peninsula in Port Douglas, the only place in the world where you can swim with southern blue fin tuna and feel the immense size, speed and power of them, on an adrenalin-fuelled tour. Adventure Bay Charters offers a two-hour trip (AUD$95) in Port Douglas, which includes a sashimi tasting too.

Wreck diving. R.Lipmann/Werner Lau Dive Centres

For diving enthusiasts, what could be more intriguing than having a look around a sunken ship on a wreck diving break? The United Nations believes there are more than three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, so there's definitely no shortage for the activity. Shipwrecks usually come with an exciting history and allow you to get up close and observe interesting parts of machinery that you wouldn't be able to see on a working ship. Plus there are many types of marine life in the artificial reefs, so you're never alone!

The Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean is a fantastic place for wreck diving. The Dori Wreck, lying off the coast of Sao Miguel Island, was a Liberian cargo ship that sunk after getting into difficulties on a journey from Africa to the USA in 1964. Today it is home to a huge range of marine life, like octopus, red porgy and schools of barracuda. Regaldive offers a seven-night holiday, including wreck diving, from £717 per person.
