Croatia is emerging as an increasingly popular destination with British holidaymakers, with bookings 23 per cent up compared to last year.

The Telegraph reports that a total of 241,443 Britons visited Croatia between January and August this year, with a total of 9.82 million visitors for the year to date.

As a result, Croatian tourism minister Veljiko Ostojic has predicted that the country is set for a record-breaking year.

This tourism boom represents the greatest influx of British holidaymakers since 1990 - shortly before war broke out in the former Yugoslavia - when 500,000 British tourists visited in one year.

This year, holidaymakers stayed mostly on the Adriatic coast and the nation's islands, with the city of Dubrovnik (pictured) proving to be particularly popular.

Tourism will get an extra boost next year, as Jet2 begins flights to Pula in Istria from Leeds-Bradford, and BA flights to Zagreb from London Heathrow re-start in December.
