Residents of a neighbourhood in Washington were stunned yesterday after part of a plane's landing gear door fell from the sky and landed in the street.

The fridge-sized piece of the Boeing 767 hit the ground at about 7am, and bounced 30 feet before stopping next to the pavement.

According to neighbours, lots of people walk through the area every day, including children on their way to school.

Local Maureen Rinabarger told komonews.com: "We were grateful that no children were hurt and it didn't hit a house or a car."

Neighbours said they saw a cargo jet flying past, and moments later the door fell from the sky.

Ms Rinabarger added: "We heard a big crash, like a slap, slap. And it did sound like a big large piece of metal."

The Federal Aviation Administration have confirmed it was part of a landing gear door from a Boeing 767, and are investigating the incident.
