Passengers on a Jetstar flight in New Zealand reportedly screamed in terror as the Jetstar plane made two attempts to land in gale-force winds in Wellington.

Gusts of up to 140kmh have been battering the capital, and a number of flights in and out of the city have been cancelled, diverted or delayed because of the bad weather.

Aucklander Mijnia Elliott told stuff.co..nz about her terrifying experience when the Jetstar plane she was in made two failed attempts to land before being diverted back to Auckland.

"The first time was terrible. The plane was just swept up by the wind and people were screaming, babies were crying," she said.

"It was the scariest landing I've ever experienced, or should I say non-landing."
