After weeks of rain and disappointing temperatures, Britain is finally basking in a warm glow - and possibly one of the longest balmy spells of the year.

Thanks to a shift in the jet stream, hot air is coming in from the Continent - and weather forecasters have suggested this balmy Indian Summer could last well into October.

According to Leon Brown at The Weather Channel, this weekend is set to be perfect for a trip to the coast. He told Aol Travel: "High pressure will tend to dominate the weather this week and build across the UK and then over central Europe. Any Atlantic fronts will be quite weak as they reach central and southern Britain so not much precipitation, although in the far north Scotland will be windy and wet at times (tomorrow and again on Thursday this week).

"The jet stream is over the northern Atlantic so very unsettled weather will move NE between Scotland and Iceland for the next couple of weeks.

"The remnants of Hurricane Kirk will pass to the NW of Scotland tomorrow as a deep low pressure centre (hence windy in northern Scotland tomorrow), and then we have tropical storm Leslie moving across the north Atlantic this weekend and towards the NE Atlantic early next week.

"These tropical disturbances may help bring in warmer temperatures to NW Europe so temperatures should be above average by the weekend and early next week.

"It could be very warm this weekend reaching 25 to 27C (high 70s to 80F) in glorious sunshine."

He added: "The first half of September is certainly looking more settled and less wet than the previous four months, especially over southern Britain. How it pans out later in the month will depend to some degree on hurricane and tropical storm tracks over the western to north Atlantic when they get caught in the jet stream, but if they continue to run to the NE of us then we could be in for an Indian Summer and a warm September."

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, is similarly optimistic. He told the Express: "We have got a glorious week ahead and a wonderful weekend to follow. The South is going to be warmer and the good weather will hold out for at least the next two weeks.

"After that it is possible the rest of the month could follow suit – which could be the longest spell of dry fine weather we have seen so far."

Time to book one of these? We think so...
