British Airways passengers were left without their luggage on Monday when a pipe in the sewage system burst at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5, covering around 100 suitcases in raw sewage.

According to The Sun, travellers had to leave without their bags after bosses hauled them off conveyor belts for cleaning.

A source told the newspaper: 'The smell was absolutely foul, as was the mood of the passengers who had to leave without their bags.'

Many passengers were still waiting to be reunited with their luggage yesterday and there are fears the problem was connected to the terminal being built on a former sewage works.

A British Airways spokesman said: 'There was a leak from the sewage system in the baggage area of Terminal 5 yesterday which affected around 100 bags.

'We appreciate this will be upsetting for passengers.'

The airline apologised to its passengers for the incident.
