A convicted murderer who avoided prison for 13 years has been arrested on a cruise ship in Kiel, Germany.

The 65-year-old Austrian man had been on the run after he was sentenced to life in prison for murder, robbery and breaking gun laws. It is not yet know how he originally escaped, but authorities boarded the ship on Saturday and took him to Kiel jail.

The man, who was travelling from Norway to Kiel, had deliberately not left the MCS Poseia cruise ship in Kiel because he mistakenly believed that he was on foreign territory because the boat was flying a Panamanian flag.

However, German authorities checking the manifest noticed his name and arrested him, explaining that they did, in fact, have jurisdiction.
