A Lufthansa plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Linz airport last week because the pilot reported a strange smell - which turned out to be cooking oil that had gone off.

According to the Austrian Independent, passengers complained of headaches when a strong smell and light smoke started to fill the cabin soon after the plane took off from Sofia.

Unsurprisingly, the pilot decided to land rather than continue with the flight to Munich. When investigators looked for the source of the smell, the cooking oil was found in the aircraft's on-board oven. It seems that the smell of burning oil had spread into the cockpit and throughout the aircraft when the oven was switched on during the flight.

Just to be on the safe side, the 115 passengers were given medical checks before they continued their journey - via bus - to Munich.
