New car salesIf you want to get your next car on credit, make sure you know how the different options work and what they might cost.

The latest batch of new car registrations – the 62 plates – will hit showrooms from Saturday (1st September). Whether you like to drive the latest model or a used car, there are plenty of ways to pay for a motor, but some are far more costly than others.%VIRTUAL-SkimlinksPromo%
Arguably the cheapest option is to save up for your car by putting money aside regularly in a savings account. But if you want to borrow, let's take a look at what the various options might cost.

Whichever option you choose, you should make sure you can afford the monthly repayments and that you factor in all of the costs, not just the cost of the finance itself, before you sign on the dotted line.

Interest-free credit and credit cards
Some dealers offer interest-free credit for up to five years to customers with a good credit rating. To benefit from this, you'll need to put down a deposit of at least 25%, although you can often part exchange your old car as part of this. However, you're not likely to get the best deal on the car if you use this method.

Some dealers also offer a 'fuel and go' credit option, which includes some or all of the following
as part of the deal: servicing, warranty, roadside recovery, breakdown cover and insurance.

While this is a convenient package, you're almost certain to pay more than if you shopped around for the 'add-ons' separately.

You could also look at a 0% purchases credit card. This won't be an option if you're looking to buy a more expensive model (£5,000+). You should also bear in mind that most dealers will charge a 2-3% surcharge on credit card purchases. However, at least with this option you'll be a 'cash' purchaser and therefore have some haggling power.

At the moment, you can secure up to 16 months at 0% on a Tesco Clubcard Credit Card or 15 months with Halifax's All in One MasterCard or Marks & Spencer Money's MasterCard. But be aware that you'll be paying a hefty rate of interest if you don't pay off your spending when the interest-free period ends.

Personal loans
You could consider taking out a low-rate unsecured personal loan. Derbyshire Building Society is currently offering a loan with a representative APR (the annual cost of interest and other fees offered to at least 51% of applicants) of 5.8%. Meanwhile, Sainsbury's Bank, Tesco Bank and Clydesdale Bank are currently offering loans at a representative APR of 5.9%.

Just make sure you're realistic about the term of your loan. New cars depreciate in value the minute they leave the showroom, so you don't want to still be paying for your car long after its value has hit rock bottom. And make sure you look at the total amount repayable, not just the APR.

Dealer finance
When you're buying a new car, the dealership will often try to 'wow' you with fabulous finance deals and the interest rates may seem pretty low at first.

However, it's important not to simply focus on how much you will be paying each month, but find out how much the deal will cost you over the total term. You should always compare these deals with the rates you'd get if you simply took out an unsecured personal loan.

While it might look like the dealer has slashed hundreds of pounds off the price, if the finance package is expensive you won't have actually saved anything. So it's well worth shopping around to make sure it's definitely the best deal before you sign the dotted line.

It's also worth remembering that by accepting an offer at the dealership, you're much less likely to be able to haggle on the car price! Don't feel pressured into taking a deal, take the paperwork away and have a think about it before you say yes. Make sure you factor in all the charges and fees you'll have to pay.

Hire purchase
Under the terms of a hire purchase agreement, the finance provider owns the car until you've made every repayment. You usually put down a small deposit and then make fixed monthly payments for a set period.

As with dealer finance, it's worth investigating how the agreement you're being offered compares to a personal loan – so make sure you ask for the 'total amount repayable' figure. And don't forget to check the small print for any extra fees or charges.

Once you've paid half the sale price of the car, you can either continue with the payment plan or return the car and walk away.

Of course, this sounds good in theory, but be warned that the lender can take back your car if you're unable to keep up with your payments, and you're also liable for any damage that occurs.

What's more, if the car gets written off in an accident, you're unlikely to receive any insurance money – even if the accident wasn't your fault – and you'll have lost your car. So you could end up paying out a lot of money for nothing.

Personal Contract Hire
Personal Contract Hire (PCH) is a form of car leasing which allows you to choose the car you want, how long you want to lease it for (usually between two to five years) as well as agree a maximum mileage and monthly payments.

The benefit of PCH is that monthly payments tend to be lower than financing a brand new car with a loan or hire purchase. This is because you are effectively renting the car, not buying it.

You therefore don't have to worry about the car depreciating in value, as it's not your problem. The car is yours until your lease contract expires, at which point you must give the keys back to the company, choose another car to lease, or simply walk away.

Taking out a PCH contract will only be worth it if you can make an accurate estimation of your annual mileage. If you exceed your agreed mileage, for example, you will be charged for every mile you go over. And if you overestimate your mileage, you'll be paying more than necessary.

Just be aware you'll be asked to hand over a deposit of around three months' payments, and that PCH contracts are usually pretty inflexible – if you break the terms of your contract, you will face hefty penalties.

And bear in mind that you'll never actually own the car – so you won't have anything to show for all those payments you've been making when the contract comes to an end.

Personal Contract Purchase
Alternatively, you could consider Personal Contract Purchase (PCP). This works upon the same principle as Personal Contract Hire, but you can keep the car if you choose to. You'll also be offered what's known as a Guaranteed Future Value for the car.

Again, you pay off part of the cost of the car over a period of three or four years – but in this case the Guaranteed Future Value and your deposit will be subtracted from the cash price of the car and the monthly payments will be based on the balance (plus interest).

When your contract comes to an end, you'll have three options. You can either pay the Guaranteed Future Value and keep the car, or hand it back and walk away, or you can use the difference between the Guaranteed Future Value of the car and the actual value as a deposit towards your next car.

Car buying plans
M&S Money offers another option called a car buying plan. This is basically a loan repayable over up to five years, with the opportunity to defer some of the loan until the end of the repayment period, meaning your monthly payments will be lower than if you took out a personal loan.

At the end of the repayment period, you can either pay off the deferred amount in full or continue repaying it monthly.

So, for example, you could take out a plan for £7,500 over three years with a representative APR of 6% and defer 40% (£3,000) of the loan amount. You'll pay £151.18 a month for those three years and then have the option of repaying the £3,000 in full or by making 20 more monthly payments of £151.18 and a final payment of £139.05. This means the total amount payable will be £8,605.13.

If you can put the deferred amount aside in a savings account ready to pay off, this might be a better option than a personal loan in terms of interest charges.

The Porsche Cayenne caused a bit of a stir when it launched in 2002 as the luxury SUV signalled a fresh direction for the traditionally sporty brand.

The second generation 2010 diesel model has been found to retain a whopping 84.2% of its original value even after three years and 30,000 miles on the clock.

A new Cayenne diesel starts from an eye-watering £47,390, but based on CAP's calculations after three years the resale value is only likely to fall 15.8%– a loss of £7,488.

Next up is a more mainstream option if you want to battle depreciation.

The Toyota Land Cruiser V8 diesel SW is the second best vehicle to retain its value over a three-year stretch clocking up 30,000 miles.

CAP Automotive found that this 4x4 retained 72.4% of its original price on average.

So a new 2010 V8 diesel available from £32,145, would only drop in value by 27.6% leaving it worth around £23,273 today – a cash loss of £8,872.

The Porsche 911 has been around for over 50 years and still remains an iconic sports car as well as a great depreciation buster. The GT Coupé body style was found to retain 72.1% of its value over three years and 30,000 miles.

So a 2011 model that would have set you back a whopping £73,123 might only fall in value by 27.9% -a loss of £20,401, by 2014.

This environmentally friendly 4x4 got a reboot in 2010 and the second generation model is still popular today.

CAP Automotive found that this particular model retained 70.3% of its original value on average.
Prices start from £28,965 and if the research stands up you should only lose 29.7% or £8,603 of the value after three years and 30,000 miles.

This compact 4x4 is a family friendly crossover that has a very adaptable interior- with the ability to remove the back seats fully.

According to CAP's research the Yeti retains 69.9% of its value over three years and 30,000 miles.

New it is the most affordable of the top ten with a starting price of £15,235 and after three years on the clock it is likely to only fall in value by 30.1%, which amounts to £4,585.

Despite its reliability track record, Land Rovers remain appealing to car buyers for its off-road ability, comfort and style.

The second generation of Land Rover's Discovery 4 can keep you in the money according to CAP's research. The make and model was found to retain 69.2% of its original value.

Prices start from £32,695 so after three years with 30,000 miles built up you might find the vehicle experiences a 30.8% drop at resale, leaving you £10,000 out of pocket.

The sporty medium-sized SUV can run circles round its load-lugging rivals and was found to hold onto 69.1% of its original value by CAP Automotive.

New the 2008-2012 range was available from £26,600, so with an average fall of 30.9% found for models with three years on the clock, buyers can expect to lose just over £8,000.

The Kia Sportage holds onto its original value well too, retaining 68.2% on average.

It's another affordable crossover with the looks of a 4x4 but less off-road ability.

The improved 2010 Sportage is available from £17,495 so a fall of 31.8% would leave you £5,560 out of pocket after three years at the time of resale.

The Mercedes-Benz Viano is the only MPV to make the list.

New the 2004-2010 Viano's were available from £35,760, but after three years and 30,000 miles the value of this range tends to drop by 33.8% - a loss of over £12,000.

Even though it's quite obscure and was only available in limited numbers with left-hand drive, the Corvette Z06 Coupé was found to retain 65.5% of its list price after three years on the road.

Available new it would have cost from £45,850 so after three years owners are likely to experience a 34.5% drop where around £15,818 would be wiped off the value.
