UK tourist attraction closed to public after dead body found

A tourist attraction in Derbyshire has been closed to the public after a woman was found dead there.

The woman, thought to be a 54-year-old from Nottinghamshire, was found in a river at Creswell Crags at around 18.30 on Tuesday.

Derbyshire police said it was keeping an "open mind" about the cause of the death, pending an investigation.

Det Ch Insp Andy Sproson told the BBC: "Unfortunately we have had to ask for the crags to be closed to the public while we continue our enquiries.

"We apologise for any inconvenience to tourists and local people."

Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge on the border between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and its cliffs contain several caves that were occupied during the last ice age, between 43,000 and 10,000 years ago.

The on-site museum showcases stone tools and remains of animals found in the caves thousands of years ago, and educational guided cave tours are available.

Its website read on 29 August: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Creswell Crags Visitor Centre will be closed for the foreseeable future.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We will keep the website updated with further information as it becomes available.
