A British tourist allegedly set fire to a French holidaymaker who had wrapped himself in toilet paper and turned up as an Egyptian mummy at a fancy dress party in Sydney.

The French man, 31, received serious burns after the incident, which has been described by police as a "prank" gone wrong.

A spokesperson for Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital said the man would have to undergo skin grafts to his upper back, neck and right arm.

The British tourist, from Wales, gave a statement at Manly police station, and was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

According to the Daily Mail, Detective Inspector Graham Cope said: "Setting fire was certainly a reckless act but probably this could best be described as a prank."
