Nearly four million Brits are planning an August Bank Holiday getaway this weekend, and in line with tradition, the weather forecast is for rain, rain and more rain.

Around two million more will be doing a much more sensible thing and heading abroad for some sunshine (remember that?) - with Spanish destinations proving particularly popular.

Wales, south west England and Northern Ireland are all set to be drenched in heavy downpours on Saturday.

Trafficmaster is predicting that the top congestion hotspots will be on the roads leading south and west from London, particularly the M25, the M3 near Dorset, the M4, amd the A303 in te south west.

According to VisitEngland, around 3.6million Britons will be taking a trip in the UK involving at least one night away.

Forecasters say that an Atlantic depression is heading towards the UK at the moment.

Paul Knightley, a senior forecaster with the Press Association's weather company, MeteoGroup, said rain would hit Wales and south-west England on Friday, while southern England could expect showers and longer periods of rain on Saturday.

"Sunday looks the best day of the holiday, although temperatures in Scotland are not expected to exceed 15C (59F).

"But bank holiday Monday could see wind and rain spreading in from the south-west. It's certainly not looking good for the weekend and you could say it's going to be typical bank holiday weather."
