A British man has died after getting into difficulties while snorkelling off the Maltese island of Comino.

Marcus Hughes-Hallett, 20, was swimming in the Santa Marija Bay when he got into trouble.

According to the Daily Mail, he was said to have been with his parents, and his father raised the alarm when he entered a cave and did not come out.

He was given first aid on the shore and flown to hospital in an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter.

According to the BBC, a police spokesman said: "He was taken to Mater Dei hospital by a helicopter from the armed forces, but unfortunately has died."

Comino is a small island between Malta and Gozo that is known for its spectacular dive sites and underwater caves.

The UK Foreign Office is investigating the incident.
