Budget
Set it and stick to it. Generally speaking, flowers that are in season are less expensive as they are readily available, so check what blooms will be at their best when you tie the knot.
While bridal magazines will no doubt give you a few pointers on what sort of flowers you would like, you may find that they are out of your price range. Don't despair - simply look for the closest cheaper alternative to make up the bulk of your display, and perhaps add just one or two of the expensive blooms to the bouquet itself.
What flowers?
What colour and type of flower you choose will depend largely on your own personal taste. You may want to complement or contrast with your colour scheme, go understated and elegant or bold and bright.
If you are hoping to make a bold statement, year-round gerberas come in a wide variety of strong colours and make for fabulous table decorations and add a burst of colour to bouquets.
For a more traditional look, freesias, with their light fragrance, and tulips remain popular, while for a classically romantic wedding, you really can't beat roses. And Lily of the Valley (typically on the pricey side) or orchids will always add a touch of elegance.
Where?
Clearly it's important to keep your flower theme throughout your day, from the church or venue right through to the reception, but different displays may call for a slightly different approach.
For the bouquets and buttonholes, for instance, it's important to choose a long-lasting bloom (again, those in season will usually prove the most resilient) as the flowers will not be in water.
At the ceremony venue, meanwhile, a little added foliage will help to fill out large displays. Pedestal arrangements within the venue can really make an impact, while trailing displays at the end of church pews are beautiful.
Table decorations should ideally be either within a tall thin-stemmed vase, or kept low so that guests can comfortably talk across the table, and be careful with heavily scented flowers - they might be fine for the bride's bouquet but fragrance is an intensely personal thing, so if you intend to use them for table decorations opt for something subtle.

There are many ways in which you can get creative with your wedding flowers, and your florist will no doubt be able to discuss some of the options with you.
For example, crystals can be added to your bouquet will compliment beading on the dress and catch the natural light for a little extra sparkle, and butterflies or feathers make for a romantic addition.
Table decorations also offer a chance to do something different. Glass bowls filled with flowers or petals still add colour and style to your venue, and if you are on a budget, pretty jars can do just as well as expensive vases.
