A former boxer has been jailed after a row with his girlfriend caused an Easyjet plane to make an emergency landing.

Ross Jameson, 23, caused the packed holiday flight from Newcastle to Alicante, Spain, to divert to Gatwick after a drunken fight with his girlfriend, Jordan Summersgill.

According to The Argus, Mr Jameson was jailed for six months after admitting being drunk and disorderly on an aircraft and hindering a member of crew at Lewes Crown Court on Friday.

Witnesses reported that he had a "furious row" with his girlfriend.

Ms Sumersgill, 19, from Middlesborough, was fined £1,000 after admitting being drunk on a plane to magistrates in Haywards Heath back in May.

Rob Jameson was a national novices boxing champion back in 2007, and is now a fire service worker.

Both Mr Jameson and Ms Summersgill were arrested when the plane diverted to Gatwick, and the incident caused big delays for holidaymakers in Alicante, with some left waiting for about three hours, reports the Daily Mail.

Holidaymaker Jacqui Nicholson, 35, from Tyneside, whose return flight from Alicante was delayed by the incident, told the Mirror: "We were initially delayed for 40 minutes, but when we went to the departure gate we found out we were going to have to wait much longer.

"Alicante airport is very small, so when the diverted plane did finally arrive the passengers were coming into the building just yards from where we were, so we were asking them what had happened.

"They said there had been a fight on board the plane so it had to divert."
