The Euro 2012 football tournament, Wimbledon and, of course, Britain's Olympic athletes have inspired more than five million adults to ditch the couch potato lifestyle and get in shape, the survey by medical firm Tissue Regenix has revealed.

Since the beginning of London 2012, some 250 people a day have joined British Cycling, presumably inspired by Tour de France hero Bradley Wiggins and outstanding Olympians Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton.

England Volleyball has also seen a sudden influx of interest with an 850 per cent increase in traffic to their website, and more than 5,500 have visited British Rowing's website in search of a local club.

And the fitness frenzy isn't just limited to Olympic sports either - Westminster Council reported that its eight leisure centres have received over one million visits this year.

According to the study, 907,000 of those embarking on a new fitness regime are over the age of 45.

Westminster councillor Steve Summers told the Daily Express: "We can't let this golden opportunity go to waste, we want to build on this great start and the inspiration of Team GB."
