A new investigation by The Sun has revealed that it's now cheaper to buy a plane ticket than a train ticket.

The Sun discovered that, when you book in advance, seven out of ten times it's cheaper to fly. When you book at the last minute, it's cheaper six times out of ten.

On Tuesday, it will be announced that the cost of train tickets will increase by up to ten per cent next year. But, as it stands, a train ticket can already cost up to three times as much as a plane ticket.

Reporters from The Sun came to this conclusion after checking prices on airline comparison site Skyscanner, with the cheapest ticket prices on the National Rail website.

Skyscanner's Sam Poullain told The Sun: "If travellers don't do their homework they may find domestic train travel is a very expensive alternative to flying."
