Five years after becoming famous when his birth was broadcast live on the internet, a gorilla hanged himself by accident on Friday at a Prague zoo, AFP reported.

Tatu was playing in a rope structure in the gorilla wing and died in the morning, the zoo director said.

'This is the most tragic event that has happened at Prague Zoo since a flood damaged a large section in August 2002,' said director Miroslav Bobek in a statement.

Zoo staff were only able to resuscitate Tatu after they managed to chase off the other gorillas from him with a water pump.

'It's mainly the female Kamba, the oldest member of the herd, who stubbornly refused to quit Tatu,' Bobek said.

In 2002, tragedy struck the zoo when unprecedented floods hit the Czech capital and zoo killing several animals including a gorilla named Pong.
