A study by research company Mintel found that the proportion of 16 to 24-year-olds now complaining of back pain is comparable to the proportion of pensioners suffering.

The research revealed that 34 per cent of young Brits now suffer from an aching back, compared to 38 per cent of over-65s.

And it seems sedentary lifestyles across the age groups are taking their toll, with two-fifths of Britons experiencing back pain.

Researchers are laying the blame for the pain in the nation's youngsters firmly at the door of the box.

Michelle Strutton, from Mintel, told the Daily Mail: "The high incidence of back pain in Britain's youngsters is pretty alarming.

"Too much time sitting, weakens muscle tone and this can lead to back pain."

Ms Strutton suggested that hours spent slumped in front of the TV or computer screens, combined with a lack of sport and poor posture, may be the reason for the increase in back problems among young people.

She added: "Back pain is becoming one of society's main issues and accounts for a high proportion of reasons for taking sick leave."

The study identified colds and flu, headaches, sore throats, coughs and back pain as the nation's top five ailments.
