We're all getting used to squeezing a week's worth of luggage into our cabin baggage - but, as a result, it looks like we're forgetting to pack some essentials.

The Telegraph reports that a survey for Viking River Cruises revealed that 41 per cent of those polled admitted to leaving at least one item behind when they go on holiday.

As a result, British tourists spend an estimated £118 million a year buying the items that they forgot to take with them.

The most commonly forgotten items were a pair of shoes, with more than a quarter (27%) admitting to leaving them behind.

Second on the list was a mobile phone charger, forgotten by 25 per cent of travellers, followed by sun cream, books, glasses and toothpaste.

However, British holidaymakers don't seem to have trouble remembering to pack more unusual items. Some of those questioned admitted to making room for brown sauce, pork pies and marmalade in their suitcases.
