A 12-year-old boy has died in hospital after a sand tunnel he was playing in at the beach collapsed.

The boy was at a beach in Long Branch, New Jersey, with his mother and brother when the accident happened.

Lifeguards performed CPR on him at the scene, before he was taken to Monmouth Medical Centre, where he was placed in paediatric intensive care.

A beachgoer from Staten Island, New York, said the boy wasn't moving when he was pulled out of the tunnel.

She told msnbc.com: "They were pumping him, pressing on his stomach, trying to bring him back.

"They kept trying to revive him, pressing, pressing. There was blood coming out of his nose... He didn't move."

Lt Frank Morey told Delaware Online that the boy dug the tunnel with his younger brother who informed their mother about the incident

Morey said the boy was breathing with a pulse in an intensive care unit when taken to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He died the following day.

Meanwhile, another accident occurred at the scene when a fire engine responding to the accident hit a man called Richard Polasdas, 46, and his four-year-old daughter.

The truck hit them as it arrived at the beach, knocking them both to the ground.

They were both taken to the Jersey Shore Medical Centre, and the father suffered a broken hip, while his daughter suffered abrasions.

The fireman driving the truck was said to be on his last shift before his retirement.
