New chemical to 'cavity proof' teeth?

A new chemical could do away with tooth cavities and keep you safe from the dreaded dentist. The 'Keep 32' molecule was designed by dentists in Chile and is said to kill all the bacteria that cause cavities in just 60 seconds.

It is hoped that the chemical could be added to toothpastes, mouthwashes, chewing gum and even foods, helping to rid mouths throughout the world of tooth decay.

Researchers say the Keep 32 chemical, so named because of the 32 teeth in the mouth, works by targeting streptococcus mutans, the bacteria that turns sugar in the mouth into lactic acid that then erodes tooth enamel.

Having undergone seven years of testing already, human trials are expected to start soon and products containing the chemical could be on the market in just over a year's time.

According to the Daily Mail, researchers José Córdoba from Yale University and Erich Astudillo from the University of Chile said: "We are currently in talks with five interested in investing in our project or buy our patent."
