Watch: London lights up as the Shard opens

Updated

A laser light show projected from the new Shard building in the South Bank lit up the damp skies of London last night (Thursday).

The 1000ft skyscraper - which is the tallest building in the European Union - marked its official inauguration with a light display using a blend of 12 lasers and 30 search lights, visible across the capital.

The display was accompanied by a performance by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

But after all the build-up to the show, many onlookers were disappointed. Twitter was abuzz with complaints. One tweet, from @karendacre said: "If the opening of the Shard is some sort of prelude to the opening of the Olympics, I suggest this: lower your expectations."
