Car mows down group of Brits on holiday in Magaluf

Updated

A car has driven into a group of British holidaymakers in Magaluf, Mallorca, injuring four people, one of whom is seriously ill in hospital.

Joe Worsnop, 20, was dragged under the wheels of the Range Rover as he was celebrating Spain's 4-0 win over Italy in the Euro 2012 final this week, reports the telegraphandargus.

A Youtube video captures the horrific scenes.

According to the local news site, Mr Worsnop was seriously injured and had to be flown from the island straight to Bradford Royal Infrimary.

His twin brother, James, was also hurt and was kept in hospital in Mallorca.

One witness told the paper that there were hundreds of people in the street chanting football songs before a police car came through and let off tear-gas to clear the crowds.

It was then that the driver of the Range Rover ploughed through the revellers.

Witness Glyn Hurst, from Bradford, said: "The car ran about five people over, then stopped for a few seconds. I saw a guy in front of it put his hands on the bonnet but the driver just kept going and went over him and the other guy was still under his tyres.... he was begging his mates 'don't let me die'."

Magaluf, a popular holiday resort for young Brits, has been blighted by bad press in recent weeks.

A spate of holidaymakers falling from hotel balconies in the resort has triggered a campaign from the British government to campaign agains 'balconing' - jumping from balconies into swimming pools.

And last week, Foreign Office figures revealed that more British tourists are getting into trouble overseas than ever before. Spanish arrests are up nine per cent on previous years, and Mallorca itself has seen an increase of almost 30 per cent in arrests, most of which are for drunken behaviour and drug-related crimes.
