A US government agency has issued a statement denying the existence of mermaids.

The announcement was made by the scientific body, The National Ocean Service, after it received enquiries from the public after a spoof TV show was aired about the mythical creatures.

The show, Mermaids: The Body Found, was screened on TV station Animal Planet, and featured "mysterious underwater sound recordings... and questions if mermaids are related to people."

It is thought that some members of the public thought the programme was a documentary.

"No evidence of aquatic humans has ever been found," the service says on its website.
