An Irish tourist has fallen eight floors to his death from a hotel balcony in Majorca.

Daniel Kenny, 24,from Athlone, Co Westmeath, fell over 25 metres from his hotel room at around 3am on Monday morning, reports the BBC.

Local police have launched an investigation into the accident at the Verdemar Apartments in the coastal resort of Santa Ponsa, which they believe was not linked to the phenomenon of 'balconing'.

According to The Sun, a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: "We have few details at the moment of the circumstances surrounding Daniel's death but we are providing assistance to his family."

Earlier this year three Brits died in separate hotel falls in Santa Ponsa in the space of three weeks.
