They're not just pretty faces: these models also make serious money. Here is Forbes' latest list of the top ten highest paid models in the world.

Quite a few hold the coveted (and lucrative) Victoria's Secret Angel title. Find out who the highest-earning supermodel is.
10. Candice Swanepoel
Made: $3.1 million

The south African model - at 23 the youngest on the list - grew up on a dairy and beef farm. She is best known for her work with Victoria's Secret as an Angel, but also represents brands such as Prabal Gurung and Rag & Bone. She was spotted in a Durban flea market when she was 15 and by the age of 16 was earning R40,000 or €5,000 a day. After two years of travelling between Paris, Milan, London and South Africa, she moved to New York to model full-time. Swanepoel has worked with photographers Mario Testino and Bruce Weber. She has held on to the tenth spot she had last year.

9. Carolyn Murphy
Made: $3.5 million

The American model and actress, from Florida, was enrolled in a modelling school by her mother at the age of 16. She started modelling in Florida as well as in Japan and Paris and moved to New York after graduating from high school in 1991. She studied at the University of Virginia while modeling part-time. Mario Testino shot her for French Vogue, Missoni, Et Vous, and Gucci.

Murphy, who was offered roles in Pearl Harbor and other films, was dubbed "The blonde Gene Tierney" by Elle magazine when a photographer noticed her resemblance to the actress in 1998. The model slipped down a place from last year but managed to stay in the top ten. She has been the face of Estée Lauder since 2001. The 38-year-old has just put her Los Angeles mansion on the market for $3 million.

8. Lara Stone
Made: $3.8 million

Dutch model Stone, who is married to British comedian David Walliams, is the face of Calvin Klein. She was first approached by an agent in the Paris Metro, at age of 13. Stone entered the Elite Model Look contest in 1999 as a 15-year-old and although she didn't win, she was signed to the Elite Modeling Agency. Her career began in earnest when she opened the Givenchy haute couture show in Paris in 2006.

Her trademark features include the gap between her front teeth and her wobbly runway walk, which can be attributed to her size 7 feet - smaller than the regular runway shoe which are size 8-10. Two years ago, her look sparked a trend in blonde, gap-toothed, big-lipped models like Georgia May Jagger, Lindsey Wixson, and Ashley Smith.

7. Miranda Kerr
Made: $4 million

The Australian wife of English actor Orlando Bloom, Kerr makes her first appearance on the Forbes list this year. The model from Sydney rose to prominence in 2007 as one of the Victoria's Secret Angels, and also represents other brands including Reebok. She also launched her own organic skincare line called Kora Oragnics in 2009.

Kerr began modelling when she was 13. Following her success with Maybelline, Kerr became the first Australian model to be offered a contract with Victoria's Secret, replacing Gisele Bündchen. Along with other models she featured in a music video for the American hip-hop single "Number One" by artists Kanye West and Pharrell.

6. Alessandra Ambrosio
Made: $6.6 million

Another Victoria's Secret Angel who has represented the lingerie giant for the last decade, Ambrosio has also been the face of other brands including Dolce and Gabbana, Moschino, Revlon, Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren, amongst others.

Having given birth to her second child, a boy named Noah, in May, she is determined to be back in shape for the opening of Victoria's Secret's first London store in July. She has knocked out Daria Werbowy to take the sixth spot on the Forbes list.

5. Doutzen Kroes
Made: $6.9 million

The 27-year-old Dutch model makes her debut in Forbes' top 10 this year, taking the fifth spot from Alessandra Ambrosio, who moved down a place from last year. She has contracts with Victoria's Secret, L'Oréal and Tiffany & Co. Kroes described herself as a "tomboy" when she was younger, although she later applied to a modelling agency in Holland, which then sent her to New York. After being cast a few times by Victoria's Secret - a brand she had never heard of when she moved to NY - she became an "angel".

Kroes has featured on the covers of Time, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Seventeen, Elle, Marie Claire and Glamour. She even made it into the Amsterdam branch of Madame Tussaud's as a wax figure. For one year until July 2010, she wrote a monthly column about her life for the Dutch edition of Marie Claire.

4. Adriana Lima
Made: $7.3 million

The Brazilian model and actress has remained in the same spot as last year. She seems to make most of her money as a Victoria's Secret Angel, which she became in 2000, but has also done work for Maybelline. At the age of 15, Lima finished first in Ford's "Supermodel of Brazil" competition, and took second place the following year in the Ford "Supermodel of the World" competition before signing with Elite Model Management in New York.

Apparently, she never thought about being a model and only entered a modelling contest because a school friend didn't want to enter alone. Lima's first acting role was the wife, alongside Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen, in the BMW film The Follow (2001), directed by Wong Kar-wai.

3. Natalia Vodianova
Made: $8.6 million

The baby-faced Russian supermodel grew up with her mother, her abusive boy-friends and two half-sisters in Gorky, Russia's third-largest city. Having run a fruit stall to help her family, Vodianova went on to join a modelling academy and soon caught the eye of a scouting agent from Paris. She was told to learn English in three months, and moved to Paris at 17. She went on to marry British real-estate heir the Hon. Justin Trevor Berkeley Portman, a half-brother of the 10th Viscount Portman. She posed with their baby son in Vogue magazine in 2001. The couple, who have three children together, separated in 2011 after more than nine years of marriage.

Vodianova has campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein's collection and his fragrance, Euphoria, and Miss Sixty under her belt. In 2005, she founded the Naked Heart Foundation which builds playgrounds for children in dowtrodden areas of Russia. She has shot up from ninth place in last year's list.

2. Kate Moss
Made: $9.2 million

English model and style icon Moss, who popularised the waif or heroin chic look in the 1990s, moved up one place this year thanks to her contracts with Rimmel, Longchamp, Mango and Vogue Eyewear. The 38-year-old from Croydon has largely given up catwalk shows, with the notable exception of Louis Vuitton's latest spring/summer show, but still features in fashion magazines. She has appeared on more than 300 magazine covers. She also has a number of perfumes from which she receives a steady stream of income.

Moss was discovered in 1988 at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Model Management, at JFK Airport in New York. Her career took off after photographer Corinne Day did a black-and-white photo shoot called "The Third Summer of Love" for British magazine The Face when she was 15.

1. Gisele Bündchen
Made: $45 million

Bündchen is the world's best earning model by a long way. Currently rumoured to be expecting her second child with husband Tom Brady, she has clung to the top spot for the sixth year running, equalling her income from the previous year. The Brazilian was crowned as the "model of the millennium" by Vogue editor Anna Wintour. She has deals with Pantene, Esprit and Versace, and also has her own line of sandals named Ipanema. Bündchen and Brady (pictured) were named the world's highest paid celebrity couple last year.

She was discovered by a modelling agency at the age of 14 while eating at McDonald's in a shopping mall in São Paulo. In 2000, she became the fourth model to appear on the cover of the music magazine Rolling Stone, when she was named "the most beautiful girl in the world". Bündchen is also known for pioneering the "horse walk" picking her knees up high and feet kicking out in front.
