UK drivers 'pay far less in Europe'

MotoristsUK holidaymakers driving to Europe are likely to pay significantly less at the pump this year due to the relative strength of the pound, a report has found.

Tourists from the UK could pay up to 8.6% less for unleaded petrol in Europe than they would have done a year ago, and diesel fuel could be as much as 10.4% cheaper, due to the power of sterling against European currencies, Post Office Travel Money's Motoring on the Continent report said.
The cheapest fuel among 18 countries surveyed was found in Andorra, which draws an estimated 10 million visitors a year to its mountainous terrain nestled between France and Spain.

Unleaded petrol in Andorra costs just £1.13 a litre, a third less than in Norway, which was named as the most expensive place to drive at £1.67 per litre. Diesel in Andorra is just a few pence over £1 a litre, making it 27% cheaper than the UK, which is the third most expensive country for diesel in the survey, with prices at £1.41 a litre or £213 per 1,000 miles.

At £1.35 a litre or £205 per 1,000 miles, unleaded petrol in the UK was found to be cheaper than countries including Ireland, France, Germany and Italy, but more expensive than places such as Spain, Austria and Luxembourg.

Although unleaded prices have fallen slightly in the UK compared with a year ago, they have risen by 39% from 97p a litre in 2007.

Only 8% of motorists surveyed for the report said that high fuel prices had put them off driving in Europe, while just over one in 10 said they would not consider travelling abroad by car.

Three in five people who said they had driven abroad had done so in France and a quarter had driven in Belgium, which are among the most expensive places to fill up in the survey.

Andrew Brown, Post Office head of travel money, said motorists should bear petrol prices in mind when planning their routes to help them cut costs.

He said: "A good tip is to fill up before leaving the UK if travelling to France or Belgium in a petrol car, divert into Luxembourg if travelling south through eastern France or detour into Andorra en route to Spain. If you are driving a diesel car, fill up as soon as you arrive on the continent as it is much cheaper in Europe than in the UK."
