A wild black bear attacked a man relaxing in a hot tub at the Whistler ski resort in Canada - with a swift blow to the head, according to police.

According to the Telegraph, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Staff Sergeant Steve LeClair said in a statement that the 55-year-old man from British Columbia ""felt a heavy blow to the back of his head which propelled him forward in the hot tub".

The statement added that he then "turned around and found himself face to face with a black bear. He yelled at the bear and retreated inside".

The man was treated for lacerations to the back of his head at the Whistler Health Care Centre.

The bear, meanwhile, was found about 100 metres away in the woods and was, unfortunately, put down.

The police statement said "the bear was destroyed" and that a necropsy would be performed on its body "to determine the motivation for the attack".

Meanwhile, another black bear had to be destroyed in Canada this week after it was identified as the animal that ate the remains of a convicted murderer.

The black bear is thought to have dragged the body of Rory Wagner from his car after he died on a remote logging road in British Columbia, Canada.

According to the Mirror, British Columbia environment minister Terry Lake said the black bear's description matched that of one seen guarding a cache that contained the remains of the 54-year-old.

Mr Lake said the animal had to be put down because bears remember food sources.
