A young woman has died after becoming trapped when a sand dune collapsed over her on a trip to Kerry beach in the Republic of Ireland.

Niamh McCarthy, 19, was a student at University College Cork, had been relaxing and playing with friends at Maharees beach near Castlegregory when the accident happened, according to the BBC.

The group, who were on holiday in Kerry celebrating the end of first year exams, were digging in a dune and jumping into it, when it shifted and collapsed on top of her.

According to the Irish Central, it is thought Ms McCarthy may have been trapped under the sand for up to half an hour while friends and other beachgoers tried to dig her out.

Two units of Tralee Fire Brigade, two ambulances and police arrived on the scene, but she was unconscious when emergency services got to her.

She was taken to Kerry General Hospital, about 20 miles away from the scene, with a doctor by her side, but tragically died from her injuries on Wednesday.
