British tourist gets £30k after Aussie bouncer breaks his leg

A British backpacker has been awarded a £30,000 compensation payout after bouncer broke his leg in Brisbane.

The court were told that Joseph O'Conell was angry about being evicted from the Cloud 9 Backpackers for being drunk and disorderly, according to news.com.au.

Police arrived at the scene to arrest him after he became aggressive towards the bouncer who worked the entrance to the hostel and the bar next door.

But the bouncer reportedly stepped in during the arrest, knocking officers out of the way, and taking Mr O'Connell to the ground, breaking his leg in the process.

Judge David Andrews found that the force used by the bouncer was "more than was reasonably necessary" and that he was mistaken in thinking he was assisting police with their duties.

The Brisbane District Court ordered that 1st Class Security pay Mr O'Connell $44,000 (around £30K) for the incident that happened back in June 2009.
