A pilot has been arrested after trying to board a plane bound for New York with a loaded gun in his bag.

Brett Dieter, 52, was charged with possessing a concealed firearm, which was picked up as he went through security at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Mr Dieter was set to fly a Piedmont Airlines (subsidiary of US Airways) flight to LaGuardia International Airport, and investigators believe he had been flying with the .357 Magnum revolver for two days.

According to the Washington Post, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer said pilots cannot carry weapons on board unless they are members of a federal Flight Deck Office Programme, which Dieter is not.

William McGlashen, a spokesman for US Airways, said an internal investigation was under way.
