A passenger plane has skidded off the runway after making an emergency landing in Munich, hospitalising at least one person and injuring five.

According to reports from the Press Association, five passengers were been injured after the plane started filling with smoke shortly after take-off.

The twin-turboprop ATR72 aircraft belongs to Air Dolomiti, a subsidiary of German airline Lufthansa. It was was carrying 62 people, and had been en route to Venice when it was forced to turn around.

On making an emergency landing, it slid off the runway before coming to a halt in the grass nearby.


The passengers and crew were all able to disembark.

Munich's southern runway was closed for several hours and 20 flights were diverted to other airports.

The cause of the incident is said to be under investigation.
