Airlines told to pay passengers compensation for flight delays

Airlines are reeling after being told they must pay passengers compensation of up to £480 each for flight delays of over three hours.

EU judge Yves Bot rejected a joint challenge from British Airways, Easyjet and TUI, and ruled that payouts for delayed inter-EU flights of 930 miles or less will be £199, and delays on flights between 930 to 1,860 miles will be £320.

According to The Sun, the ruling was aimed at settling a dispute over a regulation introduced in 2004.

Airlines are up in arms over the decision, as it could see them forking out £1 billion a year in compensation.
