Picture of the day: Rare solar halo in China
Rex
An optical illusion known as a solar halo appeared in the sky above Huangshan city in eastern China's Anhui Province for around two hours this week.
This strange circular rainbow is extremely rare because it is only created when the sun is exactly 58 degrees or more above the horizon, and its light passes through ice crystals high-altitude cirrus clouds.
Other strange phenomena in the sky snapped recently include amazing images of freak solar activity creating amazing Northern Lights as far south as Alabama.
