Bad advice on cancelling gym and payday loan payments

If you set up a gym membership or online subscription on your debit or credit card how would you go about cancelling it? Unsurprisingly many of us would be a bit in the dark over who to talk to: the bank, the person you bought the product from or both. However, even more worryingly, if you call the customer service centre of your bank to check, there's a 44% chance you'd be given the wrong advice.
